How does ESG disclosure promote technological innovation? Moderating effects based on product market competition

PurposeThe primary objective of this study is to unveil the relationships that interconnect ESG and three pillars disclosures with technological innovation while also investigating the moderating impact of product market competition. The paper seeks to identify the underlying mechanisms that facilitate technological innovation in sustainable management.Design/methodology/approachUsing data from 8,738 Chinese firms from 2011 to 2019, this study employs quantitative analysis to examine the relationship between ESG disclosure and technological innovation and the moderating effect. Moreover, this study explores the heterogeneous impacts while considering factors such as property rights and firm size.FindingsThe findings reveal a positive correlation between ESG disclosure and technological innovation. The study also investigates the moderating role of product market competition and finds that increasing competition mitigates the positive effects of ESG disclosure on technological innovation. Additionally, the conclusions reveal that the relationship between ESG and three pillars disclosures and technological innovation, as well as the moderating role of product market competition, exhibits inconsistency across firms with different property rights and sizes.Originality/valueThis study offers a clear understanding of the relationship between ESG disclosures and technological innovation, and how it varies across businesses of different sizes and ownership structures. It also provides fresh perspectives on the influence of product market competition on this relationship, with implications for strategy development in corporations.

Market power and systematic risk

AbstractWe examine the impact of product market competition on firms' systematic risk. Using a measure of total product market similarity, we document a strong negative relationship between market power and market betas. The effect more than triples in the most recent period of low competition. Anticompetitive mergers result in a significant reduction in market betas. Firms facing less competition seem to be partially insulated from systematic discount‐rate shocks. Lower equity costs therefore imply that market power is partly self‐perpetuating.

Family involvement, innovation and product market competition

AbstractThe paper constructs a theoretical framework suggesting a moderating impact of product market competition in determining the relationship between family ownership/control and innovation. We argue that the elimination of ‘career concerns’ of CEOs in firms with greater family share may explain the mechanism followed to encourage R&D investments. Empirical testing of the hypotheses is performed using data from the Indian manufacturing industry for the period 2001–2018. The findings suggest that the domestic product market competition complements the relationship between family ownership/control and R&D investments. This indicates that family firms tend to invest more in R&D as domestic product competition increases. The data suggest that the effect of family involvement on innovation is due to the reduction of managerial career concerns, as we find that managerial turnover (conditional on poor performance) is lower if family involvement is higher. This effect is significantly stronger under higher degrees of competition.

Product Market Competition, Corporate Investment, and Firm Value: Scrutinizing the Role of Economic Policy Uncertainty

This study examines the effects of product market competition on corporate investment and firm value and the moderating role of economic policy uncertainty on this relationship. The firm-level data of 1971 listed corporate firms for BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) countries during 2009–2020 were used, totaling 23,652 observations. Using the GMM estimates, our results depict that product market competition significantly influences corporate investment and firm value in BRIC countries. The result also reveals that economic policy uncertainty plays a significant role in the impact of product market competition on corporate investment and firm value at Brazilian, Russian, Indian, and Chinese firms. The study’s findings contribute to the body of knowledge by providing new evidence on the relationship between PMC, corporate investment, and firm value. These findings are vital for policymakers and regulatory bodies to focus on economic uncertainty in a competitive environment without jeopardizing investment returns in emerging markets.

Product market competition and organization capital

This study examines the impact of product market competition on a firm’s investment in organization capital using a sample of Korean, listed firms during 2001–2020. As the high product market competition provides firms with incentives to build competitive advantages and increase productivity, we hypothesize that increases in product market competition drive firms to invest in organization capital. We found a positive relationship between product market competition and a firm’s investment in organization capital. We also found that such a relationship is more pronounced for firms in the high-tech industry and financially distressed firms.

Product Market Competition, Labor Mobility, and the Cross-Section of Stock Returns

Abstract This paper explores the impact of product market competition on the positive relation between labor mobility (LM) and future returns. We develop a production-based model and formalize the intuition that low exposure to systematic risk in a concentrated industry limits LM’s amplifying effect on operating leverage. Therefore, the model predicts a stronger positive relation between LM and expected returns for firms in competitive industries. Consistent with the model’s prediction, we empirically find that LM predicts returns only among firms in competitive industries. This evidence suggests that the intensity of competition in firms’ product market potentially drives the positive LM-return relation. Product market competition and audit fees: evidence from the Chinese manufacturing industry

PurposeThis paper aims to explore the impact of product market competition (PMC) on companies’ investment in external auditing.Design/methodology/approachThis paper applies a conceptual framework derived from demand–supply analysis and a panel data set of 2,263 listed manufacturing companies in China covering the period 2012–2019. In the assessment of PMC, this study measures industry-level competition intensity and company-specific market power separately.FindingsIndustries appear to engage in a lower average level of external auditing if industrial competition intensity is either too high or too low. Similarly, companies spend less on external auditing if their market power is either too strong or too weak, and the company-level inverted U-shaped relationship is much more evident in industries with weak PMC.Originality/valueThis paper shows that a company’s external audit strategy is affected by the level of competition it faces in its market. The findings of this paper can improve the current linear PMC–auditing theoretical framework and provide insights into the strategic auditing of listed companies in China. The findings also have significant implications for policy recommendations regarding corporate governance and market scrutiny regulations.

Impact of product market competition on real activity manipulation: Moderating role of managerial ability

AbstractIn this study, we examine whether managerial ability moderates the association between product market competition and real earnings management. Prior literature largely supports the disciplinary effect of competition, suggesting that competition reduces real activity manipulation. We argue that this association is different depending on the level of managerial ability. Based on the reputation hypothesis, we argue that able managers negatively moderate the association between competition and real activity manipulation. Using a sample of US listed companies from 1997 to 2016, we find evidence to support our moderating assertion. A battery of robustness tests validates our original findings.

Competition and Innovation in Markets for Technology

We examine the impact of product market competition on innovation in markets for technology. An innovator makes an investment in quality-improving innovation that can be licensed to one (targeted licensing) or all (market-wide licensing) product market competitors. Our model points to a U-shaped relationship between competition in licensee product markets and innovation in the market for technology: at low levels of competition, market-wide licensing is optimal, and competition reduces innovation, whereas at high levels of competition, targeted licensing is optimal and competition increases innovation. PurposeThis study explores whether product market competition is a substitute for or complementary to good internal governance through promoter holdings. Specifically, it examines the impact of product market competition on the linkage between promoter ownership and firm value and investigates whether this impact varies with the type of blockholders and level of ownership.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used a fixed-effect panel regression method to analyze 1,136 National Stock Exchange-listed firms with 10,770 observations between the years 2005 and 2017. The authors computed product market competition using the Hirschman–Herfindahl Index and used the two-stage least squares regression model to address the issue of endogeneity.FindingsCompetition is a substitute for good corporate governance, especially in highly competitive industries, while promoters enhance firm value only in less competitive industries. This supports the theory that competition hinders a manager's “quiet life” hypothesis and creates disciplinary pressure to perform well. Additionally, the authors find that competition acts as a complement to promoters who are state-owned blockholders, while it acts as a substitute for promoters who are family-owned and private-owned blockholders.Originality/valueThis is possibly among the earliest attempts to integrate promoter ownership, product market competition, and firm value with the type of blockholder, especially in the context of the Indian market after 2005. The authors also provide evidence of situations in which both external and internal governance mechanisms either synergize or mitigate each other.

Testing the impact of sustainable environmental regulations on firm performance with mediating effect of product market competition: empirical evidence from Turkey.

Environmental challenges are increasingly becoming global issues due to the negatively induced effect of carbon dioxide on the natural climate and the well-being of human beings. Industrialisation has intensified the energy demand which brought the surge in the consumption of conventional non-renewable energy resources, including fossil fuels. Despite the overwhelming evidence of negative effects of utilising conventional energy on the atmosphere, there has been a steady rise in industrial production which has encouraged firms to adopt technological innovation. In this sense, many countries have developed various strategies, frameworks and regulations to reduce industrial-driven environmental degradation. Environmental-friendly compliant production technology can be an important substitute model to improve economic development. This study examines the relationship between environmental regulation and firm performance with mediating the impact of product market competition in Turkey. The study uses multi-sectoral firm-level Turkish data covering from 2004 to 2020 which was analysed via numerous methods that control for endogeneity bias. The results of generalised method of moment indicate a strong positive effect of sustainable environmental regulation (SER) on firm performance (FP). Moreover, after mediating the effect of product market competition by decomposing the firms into low product market competition (LPMC) and high product market competition (HPMC), finding reveals a negative effect of SER on FP of LMPC whereas a positive impact was found in the HPMC firms. This finding shows that HPMC compels managers to form a differentiated profit maximisation strategy. In this sense, competition can play a dedicated role in enhancing firm performance in the context of government deliberate strategies and regulations for control of the industrial negative effect on the environment. The industrial sector needs to switch from conventional energy practices to sourcing green and renewable energy that would not jeopardise the environmental quality.

Does competition in product markets affect the value of analyst coverage? Evidence from an emerging market

PurposeThis paper aims to document the impact of product market competition on the value of analyst coverage.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses variety of estimation techniques (panel regression as well as the quantile regression approaches) and the data for nonfinancial firms from India to document the impact of product market competition on the value of analyst coverage during the period between 2001 and 2018.FindingsThe findings show that the value of analyst coverage is an increasing function of product market competition. The authors argue that better information environment associated with firms operating in industries with high competition improves the quality of research done by analysts, thereby increasing the value of analyst coverage. The study results are consistent across different subsample and remain quantitatively the same when the authors use alternate estimation procedures.Originality/valueThe paper provides evidence regarding the role played by product market competition – a publicly available measure – on the value of research produced by analysts within the context of emerging markets.

A Quasi-Natural Experiment: Product Market Competition and Stock Price Crash Risk

ABSTRACT This paper uses the sample companies in China, taking the promulgation and implementation of the <<Catalogue for the Guidance of Industries for Foreign Investment>> as an external event shock, and studies the impact of product market competition on stock price crash risk. The result shows that product market competition significantly reduces stock price crash risk, which is quite different from the conclusion under the American economic environment. Further research finds that high management agency problems and opacity of enterprise information may be the impact channel of product market competition to reduce stock price crash risk.

Product market competition and cost stickiness: Evidence from China

Product market competition affects management's resource allocation and cost adjustment decisions. It also affects cost stickiness. This paper looks at the impact of product market competition on cost stickiness in different economic environments. Using quasi natural experiment and the samples in Chinese capital market, this paper analyzes and tests these questions. We conclude that (1) in emerging markets, product market competition reduces cost stickiness. (2) For enterprises with differentiation strategy, the impact of product market competition on cost stickiness is not significantly weakened. (3) For enterprises with state‐owned property rights, the impact of product market competition on cost stickiness is significantly weakened. In addition, financial strength and industry competitive position also weak the impact of product market competition on cost stickiness.

Product market competition, agency cost and dividend payouts: new evidence from emerging market

This paper examines the impact of product market competition on the dividend policy of Indian firms. We have taken product market competition as the proxy of external corporate governance. This study has used 1142 non-financial, non-utility, and non-government Indian firms listed in NSE from 2001 to 2018. For the purpose, five different product market competition and three various dividend measures were employed. Also, the interaction between product market competition (external) and board corporate governance (internal) on dividend policy was examined using a newly developed board corporate governance index (BCGI). The findings suggest that non-competitive firms are more likely to pay higher dividends than competitive firms. Non-competitive firms face more significant agency problems and therefore, pay higher dividends than competitive firms. Finally, the study found that the influence of internal corporate governance on dividends to be much higher and significant in the case of non-competitive firms compared to competitive firms. Overall, the findings of this study offer consistent evidence that external corporate governance and dividend policy are substitutes, and higher agency costs and higher internal governance strengthens this relationship. The outcomes of this study can help the managers to more precisely take dividend decisions by looking at the competition level in the market. The results suggest that managers should pay less dividends when firms operate in a high-competitive industry and vice-versa. The policymakers should design corporate governance norms after considering the competitiveness of the industry.

Market Power and Systematic Risk

We investigate the impact of product market competition on firms' systematic risk. Announcements of anti-competitive mergers lead to a significant reduction in market betas, underlining the causality of the market power--systematic risk relationship. Corporate social responsibility and corporate payout policy: the impact of product market competition

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate if and how firm performance in corporate social responsibility (CSR) is related to corporate payouts and how competition in product markets influences this relation.Design/methodology/approachLogit and Tobit regressions are used to estimate the relation between firm performance in CSR and corporate payouts.FindingsThe empirical results show that firm performance in CSR is positively related to the propensity and level of dividends, repurchases and total payouts (dividends plus repurchases). However, the positive relation between CSR performance and corporate payouts is significant only for firms that operate in low competition markets. In high competition markets, CSR performance does not seem to have any significant relation with corporate payouts.Research limitations/implicationsThis study uses MSCI social ratings data to measure net scores on CSR. There is no systematic conceptual reason for measuring social performance using MSCI social ratings. Future research should use other measures of social performance (e.g. Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Accountability Ratings and Global Reporting Initiative to estimate the relation between CSR and corporate payouts).Practical implicationsCSR firms are more likely to choose higher payouts when they operate in low competition markets.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the stream of research that evaluates the payout choices of CSR firms and competition in product markets. To the author's knowledge, this is the first study that documents the impact of market competition on the relation between firm performance in CSR and corporate payouts.

Competition Laws, Ownership and Corporate Social Responsibility

Theory offers differing perspectives and predictions about the impact of product market competition on corporate social responsibility (CSR). Using firm-level data on CSR from 2002 through 2015 and panel data on competition laws in 48 countries, we discover that intensifying competition induces firms to increase CSR activities as a strategy for strengthening relationships with workers, suppliers, and customers. The CSR-enhancing effects of competition depend on corporate ownership, with smaller effects among block-holders with shorter horizons (e.g., hedge funds) and among family-controlled firms. Furthermore, the competition-CSR effect is stronger (a) among less financially constrained firms that are better positioned to boost CSR activities and (b) in economies where social norms prioritize CSR activities, as this is where the relationship building effect of CSR are likely to be the greatest.

Competition Laws, Norms and Corporate Social Responsibility

Theory offers differing perspectives and predictions about the impact of product market competition on corporate social responsibility (CSR). Using firm-level data on CSR from 2002 through 2015 and panel data on competition laws in 48 countries, we discover that intensifying competition induces firms to increase CSR activities.
